Our History
FirstAssist Legal Protection can trace a history of growth back to 1977. Over the last thirty years it has played a key role in shaping the modern legal protection market.
The FirstAssist brand launched in March 1998, combining the operations of three specialist businesses; The Legal Protection Group (LPG), The CareAssist Group (CAG) and International Assistance Services (IAS). These companies were originally integrated after the 1996 merger of Sun Alliance and Royal Insurance.
In 2003, FirstAssist was acquired by a Management Buy Out from Royal and SunAlliance with the backing of Barclays Private Equity.
Following a strategic review, the following three individual companies were formed in January 2007 focusing on specific products, services and dedicated markets:
- FirstAssist Legal Expenses Limited
- FirstAssist Insurance Services Limited
- FirstAssist Services Limited
In 2008 Legal Expenses was re-branded as FirstAssist Legal Protection supported by a new marketing and sales strategy.
A company restructure in 2009 reorganised FirstAssist Legal Protection into two strategic business units – Before the Event (BTE) and After the Event (ATE). This enabled the company to focus on two core areas of business and to further enhance levels of innovation and client service.
